RAMSGATE BOOK & ART FESTIVAL: 2nd – 5th August 2018

The annual Ramsgate Book & Art Festival is set in the picturesque, seaside village of Ramsgate on the Kwa-Zulu Natal South Coast. This cultural, colourful and community-driven festival is entering into its fourth year and is now firmly entrenched on the S.A. annual events calendar. 2018 sees the Festival expanding to include another day and the impressive programme kicks off on Thursday 2nd and runs until Sunday the 5th of August. The Festival takes place along the main road of Ramsgate village itself. Galleries, restaurants, antique shops, courtyards, car parks and the beautiful Whale Deck overlooking the ocean are all ‘venues’ where events unfold. All are within walking distance of each other. Book signings, authors talks, art exhibitions, art demos, poetry by candlelight, crafts, entertainment, street food, panel discussions, book sales and creative workshops are all part of a beautifully laid out and varied literary programme. The overriding theme for Festival this year is... read more

Ramsgate Knit Twits

As a Ramsgate Tourism Event in June 2014, Hazel Voice and Elsbeth Koen ‘yarnbombed’ the Tanglewood area in Ramsgate in time for the World Wide Knit in Public Day. During the event about 20 ladies sat under the ‘bombed’ trees, knitting, crocheting, chatting and enjoyed a wonderful day out.  By popular request Hazel started the regular “yarning together group” …and that is how the Ramsgate’s Knit Twits began. We meet once a month, for a couple of hours or so. The meetings are twofold: We get to see one another and do what we love i.e. knit/crochet, chat and put the world to rights Plan and prepare for our next public event or needy cause. Our aim is to knit/crochet items for various charities. Bed Socks for the HIV AID’s patients Blankets for needy children Teddies for the Rape Crisis Twiddle muffs for the dementia patients Other items made,... read more

The Great Galleon ‘Sao Joao’

The story of the great galleon Sao Joao is the earliest and one of the most famous shipwreck epics from the disaster-strewn shores of Southern Africa. The Sao Joao, one of the largest ships of her time, on her maiden voyage and heavily laden with a cargo of pepper, Chinese porcelain and other merchandise, left India behind schedule for her return journey to Portugal. In May 1552, she encountered a series of severe storms off the South African coast. Her sails, mainmast and rudder were damaged causing her to drift helplessly towards land until she ultimately came to grief on the rocks. It is generally accepted that this event took place near what is now the town of Port Edward on the southern coast of KZN. About 500 people made it to the shore but some 120 of those who had been on board died in their efforts to... read more

Sonny Evans Small Craft Harbour

“You have left your footprints, not only in the sand, but also in the sea”. Thus reads an extract from the book The Sonny Side of Life written by Hazel Lodetti, in honour of her late father, South Coast legend, ‘Sonny’ Evans, who was born in South Africa in 1910. These sentiments were expressed by the Acting Mayor of Shelly Beach on the occasion of Sonny’s 80th birthday bash held at Shelly Beach Ski-Boat Clubhouse back in 1990. Never were truer words uttered in recognition of a stalwart pioneer, a son of the South Coast, in fact, our very own ‘old man of the sea’, to whom the region owes so much. Long before anyone was enjoying the amenities now provided by the Sonny Evans Small Craft Harbour, this intrepid adventurer would set out to sea from the bay in front of his home to the north of the... read more

The Ramsgate Moondeckers Evening, hosted by the Ramsgate Conservancy, is a monthly get-together that just seems to be growing in popularity and it isn’t difficult to understand why. Each month, members of the community and visitors meet at the Whale Deck Education Centre and watch the full moon rise over the ocean. Details of each month’s Moondeckers Evening will be updated on our Facebook page, so be sure to keep a lookout for the next event.  This really is a wonderful night out, bringing people together to enjoy a few drinks, chats and eats whilst watching the full moon rise over the ocean.
