The Ramsgate Literary Festival

The inaugural Ramsgate Literary Festival will take place on the 24th and 25th of September as part of UGU South Coast Tourism’s Heritage Day celebrations. The festival will highlight all the wonderful things that make Ramsgate such a special town; good books, art exhibitions, quirky museums, music, tasty food, fine wines & antiques. A dominant theme of the festival is the celebration of the local talent we have on the South Coast and we really do have some talented folk. Vicky Wentzel, from Wozani Africa Events, is the main organiser of the event. “Our focus this year is “Read Local” featuring 11 authors, 10 of whom are from the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast – many of them have written historical books on the area.” Books by local authors will be on sale throughout the event from Ramsgate Stationers, both at their store in the Southcoast Mall and from a special display at the Ramsgate Whale Deck. The Ramsgate Literary Festival Highlights

Here are some of the highlights of the Ramsgate Literary Festival. For more details of when these events take place, please have a look at the itineraries for Thursday 24th September and Friday 25th September. “KZN Literary Tourism & the South Coast Writers’ Trail” – Prof. Lindy Stiebel The highly acclaimed Prof. Lindy Stiebel will be officially opening the festival with a presentation titled “KZN Literary Tourism and the South Coast Writers.” Lindy Stiebel is Professor Emeritus of English Studies at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. She is the also the author of a number of books, her latest being, “Thomas Baines: Exploring Tropical Australia.” 2016 will see her further work on Lewis Nkosi entitled “Writing Home: Lewis Nkosi on South African Literature.” She also looks forward to the the e-publication of “A Literary Companion to KwaZulu-Natal,” a book which collects over 10 years of the KZN Literary Tourism projects which she leads. Nikia Art (Nic Grobler)

Nic Grobler’s art can be viewed at his gallery in Ramsgate, Nikia Art, which stocks some fabulous original sculptures that portray messages of hope. Nic Grobler is a talented South Coast sculptor who is famous for his meaningful “art with a message.” Nic intertwines his passion for theology with his art to create pieces that portray positive messages and tell stories, many of them Biblical. Combining his love of fine art with his interest in theology at university level, led Dr Grobler to receive a BA in fine arts, a B.Th degree, an M.Div and Doctorate of Theology. This wealth of knowledge and passion is evident in all his unique pieces.   Nic creates pieces that seek to evoke emotions in the viewer and so, naturally, he has a keen interest in Impressionist work. The Portuguese Mariners Food, Wine & Family Festival

Traditional dancing, scrumptious food and awesome entertainment are what makes this event one of the most anticipated of the year. The Portuguese Mariners Food, Wine and Family Festival takes place at the Mac Banana estate from Friday 24th until Sunday 26th July 2015. The event kicks off on the Friday night with a shipwreck party at Fazenda Restauranté to commemorate the sinking of the Sao Joao in 1552. The shipwreck theme of the event is sure to be entertaining with guests requested to wear “whatever they were wearing when the ship went down.” From nightgowns to ball gowns, expect to see it all. Tickets for this event are R150 and guests will enjoy a traditional Portuguese feast, live music and dancing. Children are welcome at R35 per child, which includes a burger, chips and soft drink. World Wide Knit in Public Day

The Ramsgate Knit-Twits are celebrating World Wide Knit in Public day on 13th June. You will find them knitting and crocheting in public from 10:30am until 4pm at the entrance to the Ramsgate Whale Deck and Enviro Centre. These talented folk will be “Beanie Bombing” and hope to have over 200 hand-crocheted and knitted beanies on display and for sale, with all proceeds going to charity. The Burlesque Café will have their delicious vegetable and beef burgers for sale, so bring your crochet or knitting needles, a comfy chair and join in the fun. If you are not keen to join in the actual knitting, that is okay too. Riverbend Crocodile Farm

A visit to Riverbend Crocodile Farm is a very popular outing on the lower South Coast.  The beautifully landscaped farm is home to hundreds of Nile Crocodiles, snakes, and birds. Enjoy a leisurely stroll through the farm and get to know the beautiful inhabitants. For an added thrill, visitors can view feedings on Sundays at 15:00 and on some Wednesdays during the warmer summer months. The farm offers valuable information on crocodiles and snakes, and their biology. The Ramsgate Organic Market held at the Lions Village Hall in Glenmarkie Drive is a local treasure that is fast growing in popularity and stalls. Every Saturday from 8am to 11am you will find eager customers lining up to purchase their weekly fruit and veggies, homemade breads and jams or just enjoy a friendly cup of tea and a chat. Artists’ Gallery KZN is home to a collection of quirky and contemporary art, including paintings, sculpture, ceramics, art photography, and jewellery.
