Famous Fishing Spots – High Rock, Ladder Rock & Splash Rock

Fishing is much more than fish.  It is the great occasion when we may return to the fine simplicity of our forefathers.  ~Herbert Hoover Palm Beach High Rock (S30 59.322 E30 16.500) This is a well known deep water spot to the south of Trafalgar. Whilst it is a productive fishing spot, it is an awkward fishing platform and not for the novice angler. Ladder Rock (S31 01.050 E30 15.177) This is a fishing spot which should only be visited by the novice with the purpose of viewing. Even the most experienced local anglers treat this deep water point with the greatest of respect as many a one has been unexpectedly washed off this point, most often with serious consequences. Be warned! Splash Rock (S31 02.989 E30 13.779) Any angler who has visited Port Edward will know Splash Rock. This presents a good, relatively safe deep water fishing platform... read more

The Great Galleon ‘Sao Joao’

The story of the great galleon Sao Joao is the earliest and one of the most famous shipwreck epics from the disaster-strewn shores of Southern Africa. The Sao Joao, one of the largest ships of her time, on her maiden voyage and heavily laden with a cargo of pepper, Chinese porcelain and other merchandise, left India behind schedule for her return journey to Portugal. In May 1552, she encountered a series of severe storms off the South African coast. Her sails, mainmast and rudder were damaged causing her to drift helplessly towards land until she ultimately came to grief on the rocks. It is generally accepted that this event took place near what is now the town of Port Edward on the southern coast of KZN. About 500 people made it to the shore but some 120 of those who had been on board died in their efforts to... read more

Crag’s View Wild Care Centre

It all began in 1999 when Trafalgar resident, Dorothy McIntyre, brought a tiny 360 gm blue duiker calf which had been caught by a cat, to Craig Hosken and Ina de Koker who lived at Crag’s View, in the Port Edward area. Ina and Craig, largely inexperienced at the time in the rehabilitation of wild life, contacted Lyn Milton who ran the Orphanage for Wild Life (OWL) in Paddock for advice. Miraculously, the tiny creature was a fighter and survived the mauling. And so began a journey for Craig and Ina, who both sensed a definite calling to take care of and rehabilitate sick, injured or displaced creatures of all kinds. There were challenges, however, as one cannot simply take in and harbour wildlife, even with the best intentions, as the law protects our fauna and flora. Persons embarking on such a venture must apply for permits from the... read more
