TOP SA PENCIL ARTIST VINCENT REID EXHIBITS IN RAMSGATE THIS JUNE

Artists’ Gallery in Ramsgate is home to a collective of eight top South African artists. A unique aspect of the gallery is that one or more the artists’ themselves are usually in attendance at the Gallery daily. This provides a fabulous opportunity to chat with them directly. The Gallery holds Workshops and Exhibitions on a regular basis and next up is the world renowned pencil artist Vincent Read who is part of the collective. Vincent lives and works in his studio in Howick and will be in attendance at the opening on Thursday the 16th of June, starting at 6p.m. He will be exhibiting some of his latest work and the exhibition is entitled “Drawn to Africa”. Earth Hour 2016

The Ramsgate Conservancy invites you to join them in participating in Earth Hour 2016 on Saturday 19th March 2016. Please switch off all your lights and appliances from 8:30pm to 9:30pm in an effort to raise awareness about the very real dangers of climate change. Live Music @ Burlesque Cafe

The Ramsgate Literary Festival

The inaugural Ramsgate Literary Festival will take place on the 24th and 25th of September as part of UGU South Coast Tourism’s Heritage Day celebrations. The festival will highlight all the wonderful things that make Ramsgate such a special town; good books, art exhibitions, quirky museums, music, tasty food, fine wines & antiques. A dominant theme of the festival is the celebration of the local talent we have on the South Coast and we really do have some talented folk. Vicky Wentzel, from Wozani Africa Events, is the main organiser of the event. “Our focus this year is “Read Local” featuring 11 authors, 10 of whom are from the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast – many of them have written historical books on the area.” Books by local authors will be on sale throughout the event from Ramsgate Stationers, both at their store in the Southcoast Mall and from a special display at the Ramsgate Whale Deck. Here are some of the highlights of the Ramsgate Literary Festival. For more details of when these events take place, please have a look at the itineraries for Thursday 24th September and Friday 25th September. “KZN Literary Tourism & the South Coast Writers’ Trail” – Prof. Lindy Stiebel The highly acclaimed Prof. Lindy Stiebel will be officially opening the festival with a presentation titled “KZN Literary Tourism and the South Coast Writers.” Lindy Stiebel is Professor Emeritus of English Studies at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. She is the also the author of a number of books, her latest being, “Thomas Baines: Exploring Tropical Australia.” 2016 will see her further work on Lewis Nkosi entitled “Writing Home: Lewis Nkosi on South African Literature.” She also looks forward to the the e-publication of “A Literary Companion to KwaZulu-Natal,” a book which collects over 10 years of the KZN Literary Tourism projects which she leads.
