The Sardine Marathon & Half Marathon

The Sardine Half Marathon, presented by the South Coast Striders, has been a highlight on the local running calendar for a number of years. Runners come from far and wide to take part in this beautiful race. The race is a challenging one with some serious climbs, awesome downhills and welcome flat sections. The scenery makes it all worthwhile, with some of the best views you can find on the coast. This year’s race sees a few changes to the route, so if you have run it before, take note of the map below. The route is run in the opposite direction to previous years and starts and finishes with some great downhills to get the blood pumping. Starting at South City Christian Schools, with a quick downhill and a meander towards the sea, the route runs right alongside the ocean at two sections before turning inland for a bit of a climb.... read more

World Wide Knit in Public Day

The Ramsgate Knit-Twits are celebrating World Wide Knit in Public day on 13th June. You will find them knitting and crocheting in public from 10:30am until 4pm at the entrance to the Ramsgate Whale Deck and Enviro Centre. These talented folk will be “Beanie Bombing” and hope to have over 200 hand-crocheted and knitted beanies on display and for sale, with all proceeds going to charity. The Burlesque Café will have their delicious vegetable and beef burgers for sale, so bring your crochet or knitting needles, a comfy chair and join in the fun. If you are not keen to join in the actual knitting, that is okay too. The Moondeckers Evening

What can be better than pulling up a chair, sitting under the stars and watching the moon rise over the ocean? The Ramsgate Moondeckers Evening, hosted by the Ramsgate Conservancy, is a monthly get-together that just seems to be growing in popularity and it isn’t difficult to understand why. Each month, members of the community and visitors meet at the Whale Deck Education Centre and watch the full moon rise over the ocean. Delicious food will be on sale, with all proceeds going to the Ramsgate Conservancy, and entertainment is provided by the mellow sounds of local guitarists and vocalists. Bring & Braai and Quiz Night

A great evening of fun and games Once a month the Ramsgate Lions host a bring and braai at the Ramsgate Village Hall. This is a social evening that is eagerly anticipated by members of the community. All visitors are welcome to join in the fun and get to know some of the Ramsgate locals. There are ample fires which are lit from 6pm and lots of lovely salads are on offer for a donation of R25. The cash bar is available so all you need to bring is the meat or veggies you wish to braai. One of the highlights of the evening is undoubtedly the famous quiz. Steve Fataar at Burlesque Cafe

Visitors to Ramsgate are in for a treat. South African music icon, Steve Fataar will be performing at Burlesque Cafe for one night only on Saturday 30th May at 7pm. Steve is well known for his laid back music style and engaging manner that captures the audience’s attention and keeps it for the duration of his time on stage. He tells beautifully poignant stories in song with his skillful guitar playing and smooth voice. The Hibiscus Coast Ultra Marathon

Sunday the 26th April 2015 sees the inaugural running of the Hibiscus Coast Ultra Marathon. This highly anticipated event is hosted by the South Coast Striders and looks set to become a highlight of the running calendar. The event caters for all distance enthusiasts. There are three distances to choose from, the 48km ultra, a 24km run and a 5,6km fun run. The challenging 48km ultra route includes some of the most scenic views the Hibiscus Coast has to offer. Starting from Southcity Christian School in Ramsgate, the route will take runners down past some breathtaking ocean views then up into rural Gamalakhe and then onto the lush green hills KZN is famous for where you will be awarded spectacular inland views on one side and ocean views on the other. This beautiful race is a comrades qualifier and a great run to try as your first ultra.
