Traditional dancing, scrumptious food and awesome entertainment are what makes this event one of the most anticipated of the year. The Portuguese Mariners Food, Wine and Family Festival takes place at the Mac Banana estate from Friday 24th until Sunday 26th July 2015. The event kicks off on the Friday night with a shipwreck party at Fazenda Restauranté to commemorate the sinking of the Sao Joao in 1552. The shipwreck theme of the event is sure to be entertaining with guests requested to wear “whatever they were wearing when the ship went down.” From nightgowns to ball gowns, expect to see it all. The Macbanana butterfly dome offers visitors an opportunity to get up close and personal with these delicate insects while learning about their environment. The guides are friendly, well trained and very knowledgeable about the species of butterflies in the dome. If you’re lucky. you might see one emerging from a pupa. We were not so lucky, but it was fascinating seeing the pupae and eggs as the guide pointed them out. Butterflies are incredibly sensitive to environmental change and sadly many of South Africa’s indigenous forest and grassland areas are under threat. Butterflies are dependent on specific varieties of vegetation, or host plants, for laying their eggs, feeding and pollinating.
