The Macbanana butterfly dome offers visitors an opportunity to get up close and personal with these delicate insects while learning about their environment.
The guides are friendly, well trained and very knowledgeable about the species of butterflies in the dome. If you’re lucky. you might see one emerging from a pupa. We were not so lucky, but it was fascinating seeing the pupae and eggs as the guide pointed them out.
Butterflies are incredibly sensitive to environmental change and sadly many of South Africa’s indigenous forest and grassland areas are under threat. Butterflies are dependent on specific varieties of vegetation, or host plants, for laying their eggs, feeding and pollinating. If these host plants are removed then the delicate habitat is altered and the butterflies become threatened.
Macbanana makes learning about nature interesting and interactive. Its great fun for the whole family and it may just get your kids off their phones … for a while.
