The Sardine Marathon & Half Marathon

The Sardine Marathon & Half Marathon

The Sardine Half Marathon, presented by the South Coast Striders, has been a highlight on the local running calendar for a number of years. Runners come from far and wide to take part in this beautiful race.

sardine marathon logoThe race is a challenging one with some serious climbs, awesome downhills and welcome flat sections. The scenery makes it all worthwhile, with some of the best views you can find on the coast.

This year’s race sees a few changes to the route, so if you have run it before, take note of the map below. The route is run in the opposite direction to previous years and starts and finishes with some great downhills to get the blood pumping.

Starting at South City Christian Schools, with a quick downhill and a meander towards the sea, the route runs right alongside the ocean at two sections before turning inland for a bit of a climb. At the top of the climb you will be rewarded with beautiful views of the coast below you on the one side and rolling green hills on the other. An exhilirating downhill then takes you to the end of the loop.

The Sardine has grown to now incorporate 6 different race distances, all taking place on Sunday 5th July:

  • 21.1 km half marathon run/walk starts at 6:30am
  • 42.2 km marathon run (double half marathon loop) starts at 6:30am
  • 10 km run starts at 7:45am
  • 5 km run starts at 7:45am
  • 2 km trail run starts at 9am
  • 50m nappy dash starts at 10am

There will be medals to all finishers within the cut-off times: 6 hours for the marathon and 4 hours for the half marathon.

Pre-entries close on 30th June, thereafter entries will be taken at on Saturday 4th July at Shelly Centre from 9am-12pm and at Southcity Christian Schools from 1-4pm. Late entries will be taken on race day, on Sun 5th of July from 05:00 to 06:00 for the half and full marathon, until 8am for the 10km and 5km and until 9.30am for the 2km and 50m nappy dash at Southcity Christian Schools.
